Bonnie Jean (Tawlks) Vaatveit's Story

Bonnie Jean (Tawlks) Vaatveit, aged 89, passed away after a long and courageous battle with chronic lung disease and Crohn's Disease on July 4, 2026, in San Jose, California near her long-time home of Saratoga, California. Born on January 12, 1937, in Hanford, California, Bonnie lived a life defined by compassion, resilience, and dedication to her family and community.

The daughter of Bruce and Mildred Tawlks, Bonnie grew up in California's Central Valley, where she developed a strong work ethic and deep appreciation for family values as the only child of a farmer. She spent her early years in Wasco before pursuing her passion for nursing. In 1957, she graduated from Fresno General Hospital School of Nursing and later earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco in 1962.

Bonnie's nursing career was both diverse and impactful. Over the years, she worked in various specialties including the operating room, isolation, public health, ICU, and dermatology. Her dedication to caring for others extended beyond her professional life. After retiring in 1995, she continued to serve her community providing respite care for caregivers and tutoring nursing students as well as volunteering with Kaiser Permanente's Health Education department, focusing on helping patients cope with chronic conditions.

Bonnie married Eugene Vaatveit, her devoted husband of 63 years. Together they built a loving family that became the center of Bonnie's world. She is survived by Eugene; their three children: Gene (Kathleen) Vaatveit, Tom (Diana) Vaatveit, and Kari (John) Leetch; five grandchildren: Benjamin, Annika, Austin, Sarah, and Danielle; and four great-grandchildren: Axton, Amelia, Adalyn, and Ayla. Her parents preceded her in death.

A woman of many talents and interests, Bonnie found joy in cooking elaborate meals for loved ones and attending symphony performances. She was an avid fan of Sharks hockey and enjoyed needlepointing intricate designs. Her love for nature was evident through her passion for bird watching and flowers, especially orchids. Each year on her wedding anniversary, Eugene gifted her a new orchid to add to her cherished collection. Bonnie also had a keen mind for puzzles and mysteries. She delighted in solving jigsaw puzzles and crosswords daily while immersing herself in murder mysteries and historical novels.

Bonnie's adventurous spirit led her to travel extensively with family, often to places of significance to the family's ancestry. She pursued genealogy with enthusiasm as she traced her family's history across generations. Ever determined to grow personally and overcome challenges, she joined an investment club to conquer her fear of finances, a testament to her courage and willingness to embrace new experiences.

A devout Catholic throughout her life, Bonnie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Her faith provided strength during difficult times as she faced a long battle with Crohn's Disease and chronic lung disease with remarkable grace.

Bonnie will be remembered as a devoted nurse who cared deeply for others; an extraordinary wife; a loving mother; an adoring grandmother; and someone who always put family first. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched with kindness and unwavering love.
