Carol Ann Cantlen, 90, passed away peacefully at home on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2024.  She leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and devotion that impacted all who knew her. She was a spirit of kindness, generosity, and service to others, exemplifying the core values of her faith in every relationship she touched.

Carol was born on October 20, 1934, in Illinois. She was adopted by Dorathea and Arthur Thorson, who raised her and her brother Rod in the small town of Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Growing up, she developed a love for people, creative arts, and for water and snow skiing. Her academic interests led her off to college.  She attended Stevens College and then finished her studies at Northwestern University with a degree in Education.

After graduating, Carol packed her skis and made her way to California, to embrace the energy and excitement of the West Coast. She began her teaching career in Los Altos, all the while exploring the mountains, cities, and beaches of California.  It was on one of these fateful trips that she met the love of her life, John Joseph Cantlen. They married in 1963 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and together, they created a home in Saratoga, California, where they raised three children: Kelly Marie, John Joseph II, and James Arthur.

Carol's greatest calling in life was motherhood, and she reveled in the role.  She poured her heart into raising her children, taking great pride and joy in sharing their achievements and offering her steady hand and loving advice when things were challenging.  She was a mother to many, always opening her heart and home to those in need. Mom, as she was known to most, compassionately and selflessly sacrificed so many opportunities in her life, always placing the needs and interests of her loved ones first.

Carol enjoyed arts and crafts, and her creativity knew no bounds—whether it was handcrafting Halloween costumes, hosting elaborate birthday parties, or turning her home into a wonderland for every holiday, Carol made every event warm, inviting and exceptionally memorable. She quilted works of art both literally and figurately throughout life. She took great joy in lovingly binding both fabrics and relationships together, crafting blankets of love and warmth that have become treasured keepsakes that will embrace for generations to come.

Motherhood was her calling so when her children moved out the desire to transition into a grandmother could not come too soon in her life.  She was well known as "Gramma CC" to her seven grandchildren. Gramma CC was a very active fixture in their lives - sharing their adventures, tossing footballs, slashing a hockey stick, or organizing DIY art projects.  Spoiling them with little treasures and ice cream was a common theme.  Watching them grow and thrive filled her with great pride.

Carol was an ardent sports fan, cheering for the USC Trojans and the San Francisco 49ers. Carol's voice could always be heard well above the crowd when rooting for her teams and cheering for her kids and grandkids.

In 2018, Carol suffered a debilitating stroke. But true to her character, her fiery spirit and inner resolve allowed her to achieve recovery goals often thought beyond her reach.  Hers was a heroic journey motivated by love for family. The unconditional love and enthusiasm of her grandchildren infused a wellspring of vitality in her sprit, empowering Gramma CC to face each difficult day with hope and resilience. She faced her greatest hardship with a warrior spirit, a witty sense of humor and boundless determination.   A true inspiration of courage and stoicism to all that she touched during this journey of adversity.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all the family, friends, medical staff, therapists, the hospice team, and caregivers that helped and served mom through her stroke recovery and final stages of life.  You all earned a special place in the heart of Carol, and in turn, in the hearts of our entire family.

Carol is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, John Cantlen; her children, Kelly (Boyfriend Pete), John II (wife Kelly), and James (Wife Lindsey); and her grandchildren Tanner, Braden, Sean, Madison, Brody, Hudson, and Lillyan.

Carol recently celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends. The celebration was a fitting tribute to her remarkable 90 years and to the strength and spirit she displayed throughout her life. This homage to her life will stand in place of a memorial service.
