Dorothy Brand Comstock passed away peacefully on February 11, 2022.

Dorothy was born in St Claire Shores, Michigan on June 22, 1931. The oldest of three siblings, she is survived by her bother Richard (Carol Malcolm) Brand of Santa Rose, CA and preceded in death by brother Bill Brand.

Dorothy obtained a B.A. Ed. at the University of Michigan in 1953. It was there that she met the love of her life, Kirke Comstock and they were married the week she graduated. Dorothy was introduced to Kirke by his twin sisters Betty and Nancy who lived in her freshman dormitory. Kirke and Dorothy were married 63 years at the time of his passing in August of 2016.

After her husband Kirke graduated from U of M in 1954 Kirke took a job with United Airlines in South San Francisco. She was very excited to move to California. Dorothy had been working as an elementary school teacher in Ann Arbor and took a schoolteacher job in San Mateo at that time. In 1956 they had first child a son William (Debra Nichols) followed by a daughter Karen in 1961 and Kristin (Mark Pugh) in 1962. Dorothy was active in the lives of her children supporting: Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, chamber orchestra, team sports and family travel.

Dorothy and Kirke were active in local City and State politics, hosting many a fund raiser at their home in Palo Alto. They both were dedicated to the protection of the environment and were founding members of The Committee for Green Foothills.

Later in life when her children were grown-up, she went to work for Stanford Alumni Association as a receptionist, and office project manager. She enjoyed the interaction with students and alumni biking over to campus from her home in Palo Alto.

In her 70s she volunteered for Kara as a peer counselor for grief support. She enjoyed learning about grief support and crisis intervention and meeting members of the community at large.

Late in life she suffered from dementia and the loss of her dear husband. She is survived by her granddaughter Katherine Nichols Comstock and preceded in death by her grandson Jaime Castillo.

A memorial service will be held later for family and friends.
