Obituary

The family of Elizabeth Joan Smith (known to most as Joie) of Saratoga, CA is saddened to announce her passing on Thursday, November 6, 2025 at the age of 93 years. After battling esophageal cancer for nearly a year, she peacefully passed away in the early morning while sitting in her chair watching TV.  She was predeceased by her loving husband, Harry J. Smith, and eldest son, Michael Dale Smith. Joie will be missed by her son, Todd Smith, and daughters, Dana Mavrakis and Jeannine Grube plus her 4 grandchildren, Emily, Leslie, Allison, and Ryan, and her great grandson, Rowan, as well as numerous other family members and friends.

Joie was born in Shelbyville, Indiana, on May 13, 1932 to Forrest and Catherine Dale. She grew up in Shelbyville and met her sweetheart, Harry Smith in high school. At the age of 20, she and Harry were married on June 9, 1952. In 1955, she gave birth to their first son, Michael, in West Lafayette, IN. In 1956, Harry graduated from Purdue University with a Master's Degree in Mathematics. Then, they drove across the country to Mountain View, CA with Joie's parents and Michael. She gave birth to their second son, Todd, in 1957. In 1961 their daughter, Dana, was born and in 1963, Jeannine was born. A few months after Jeannine's birth, Harry and Joie moved their young growing family to a newly built home in Saratoga, CA where she lived until she passed. In 1967, Joie and Harry took in Joie's parents, Doc and Kate, to provide for them and care for Joie's father, who passed in1971. Grandma Kate lived with Joie and Harry until she passed at 94 years in 2001.

Joie spent most of her life as a mother, homemaker and care giver to her parents. She was a wonderful cook and hostess. Holidays, birthdays, and family gatherings were always full of wonderful food. She especially enjoyed trying new recipes. The house was also always full of pets-usually 2 dogs and 2 cats at the same time plus birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, and fish. Joie loved to do all kinds of crafts and was still hand sewing projects up to the day before she passed away.

Joie will be laid to rest with Harry at Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga, CA with a graveside service for family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the cancer charity of your choice.
