The spirit of our kind mother guides us from above. She dedicated her life to her husband and her family. She was always present for her children - at home, school, sporting activities, recitals and many joyful family celebrations. And when her children married, she was always present in her grandchildren's lives, offering love and support, and receiving big hugs in return. Caring and affectionate, she was God's gift to us.Joan is survived by her husband of 53 years, Leonard, son Jeffrey (wife Catherine; grandchildren: Laura and Julie), daughter Jill Curcelli (husband Felice; grandchildren: Giulia and Cristina), and son Mark (wife Monica; grandchildren: Paul and Anna). She is also survived by her sister Beverly Schreiber (husband Don).Born in Washington D.C. to Philip and Dorothy Bagley, she soon moved to San Leandro and later to Fremont. Every day she was on the tennis court with her dad as coach, and she won many Northern California junior state championships. Joan attended Washington High School in Fremont and graduated from San Jose State University in 1962. She was a member of Alpha Phi sorority and a Spartan booster.Joan married her college sweetheart, Leonard Perrone, in the summer of 1962. She taught first grade in the Jefferson Union School District. After starting a family, she continued substitute teaching. In 1964, Joan and Len bought their first home in Fremont, and in 1967 moved to Walnut Creek. Joan was a Girl Scout leader and a catechism teacher at St. John Vianney Church while supporting the children in their many activities.In 1973 the family moved to Saratoga. Joan was an active leader in the Foothill 4-H Club teaching cooking, cake decorating, baking, food preservation, and vegetable gardening, along with beekeeping, raising poultry and guinea pigs. Whenever her children competed in sports, they knew that they would find their mom cheering for them in the stands. She loved to host family parties where she would prepare traditional recipes with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed family vacations including annual house boating trips on Trinity Lake, fishing trips to Hawaii, Alaska, and British Columbia, and traveling in Mexico, Argentina, Canada, Japan, and throughout Europe and the United States. Joan was an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Saratoga. She taught CCD-Faith Formation, and volunteered at Martha's Kitchen, Sacred Heart Community Service and the Saratoga Public Library. She was a member of the Los Gatos Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and enjoyed assisting veterans in the Paws for Purple Hearts program. She was humble and throughout her life expressed deep appreciation for all that God provided her.Friends are invited to attend a funeral mass on April 16, 2016 at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church, 13716 Saratoga Avenue, Saratoga 95070.
