Jud's early education at St. Paul's English High School in Rangoon bookended the Second World War. Although Jud began his studies at the University of Rangoon, he graduated from the University of Missouri at Rolla with a Bachelor's of Science in Mining Engineering in 1954, with the intention of returning to Burma to manage his family's tungsten mines.
Heeding his father and brother-in-law, Ah Fong's warning of political instability in Burma, he remained in the United States and went on to receive a Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering in 1955 and a Master's of Science in Civil Engineering in 1958, also at the University of Missouri at Rolla.

Jud began his career at the Illinois Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, but was drawn to the West Coast. He retired in 1992 after a long career as a civil engineer with Bechtel Corporation, working on notable projects including: Istana Nurul Iman (the palace of the Sultan of Brunei); airports in Dubai, Hilo, Kona, and Las Vegas; and Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). Following his retirement, he became an active volunteer at the Tzu Chi Foundation. Jud loved traveling; investing; playing with his beloved granddaughters, Sarah and Caroline; and was very health conscious.
