Kanaka Damodar
Prabhu
Jan 12, 1936 — Nov 11, 2022
Sunnyvale
Mrs. Kanaka D. Prabhu BA, MA, née Kini, passed from this earth November 11, 2022 at the age of 86 in San José, California. She was born in Mangalore, India on January 12, 1936 as the second oldest of four children to her parents Snehalatha and Ramakrishna Kini. Faced with the loss of her mother at a young age, she knew adversity, but as always she persevered and attended college. She obtained a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English, and taught college level English. She married Mr. Damodar Prabhu in 1958, her husband of 61 years until his passing in 2019, and they had two sons – Naresh in 1959 and Sumanth in 1963. In 1970, the Prabhu family immigrated from Kolkata, India to the United States to pursue a better life. The family arrived in New York City, then moved to Connecticut and Pittsburgh, where she spent more than 40 years of her life. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother valuing her family above everything else. Amma was our rock, and supported us through all ups and downs. She had a long and successful career at Marsh & McLennan Companies as a pension analyst. She was a woman of deep religious convictions and devotee of the Hindu faith, and was a key member of the Sri Venkateswara Hindu Temple in Pittsburgh for four decades. She is survived by her sons Naresh Prabhu and Sumanth Prabhu, her daughter-in-law Carolina Salvador, her grand-daughter Surina Prabhu, and her older sister Sulochana Prabhu. She was preceded in death by her husband Damodar Prabhu, her grandson Rahul Prabhu, and her two younger siblings, Madhav Kini and Prathima Baliga, whom she now joins in the afterlife. She is deeply missed by all of us.
Instead of flowers, the family asks that donations in her memory, or in the memory of Kanaka and Damodar Prabhu, be sent to the humanitarian or education funds of the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Pittsburgh, https://svtemple.org/#/services/donation
