Kathrine ("Kay") Hurant was born Kathrine Ann Hansen on November 12, 1941 to Danish and German parents, Martin and Charlotte Hansen, respectively. She was raised in Ventura, CA with her younger sister, Carol.   Their family practiced the Presbyterian faith and Kathrine embraced its teachings which included "extending an olive branch" to those in need as it encouraged an atmosphere of forgiveness.

Kay attended Ventura College and California State Northridge where she obtained a degree in Education.  Kay enjoyed a long and fulfilling teaching career primary focused on kindergarten-aged students.  She taught at various schools in Los Angeles as well as St. Lucy's in Campbell, CA and Saint Joseph's in Palo Alto, CA.  She was passionate about her students as well as the numerous children's books she shared in her classroom.

While living in Los Angeles, Kay met and quickly fell in love with Talbot Hurant who shared the same apartment complex.  Their marriage was one filled with great love, understanding, and commitment.  They gave birth to their first daughter, Julie Hurant, in 1971 and then twins daughters, Kristen and Lara Hurant, in 1974 and settled into a beautiful life in Saratoga, CA.

Upon Talbot's untimely passing in 1985, Kay continued teaching until she eventually retired to focus on her other passion of real estate which she had shared with her husband.  Kay also inherited her appreciation for investing and managing real estate from her father, Martin, who owned several commercial properties in Ventura. Kay delighted in meeting her new tenants, remodeling her properties, and the portfolio of properties she amassed during her lifetime demonstrated her skill as a savvy business woman as well.

Kay juggled various aspects of her life including family, work and her interests. She enjoyed time spent with family and cherished her grandchildren Talia, Dylan, Avery and Brennan.  She also deeply cared for her sister's children, Alexandra and Andrew Heric.

She was involved in several clubs and organizations such as a book club and TOPS. She appreciated that these gatherings brought her and friends together, and she valued the camaraderie and philosophical insights they shared.

Kay also ventured to many places that spanned the globe, including China, Russia, Africa, Europe, Mexico, Egypt, and Alaska.

In the later part of her life, Kay enjoyed a relationship with Jim Spear. They spent their time taking walks, traveling through California and Oregon, connecting with family and friends, and eating together at some of their favorite restaurants.

Kay passed away on the evening of Friday, March 5, 2021, at the age of 79.   She is survived by her daughters, Julie, Kristen (and partner Thomas Saunders), and Lara Hurant (and husband Jim Gardner), her partner Jim Spear, her grandchildren, her niece and nephew Alexandra and Andrew Heric, and her brother-in-law Mark Hurant and his family.  Kay will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, partner, and dear friend who was kind, patient, caring, compassionate, generous, and had a quiet strength as well as touched the hearts of all who knew her.

A private burial was held at the Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga, CA on Friday, March 19, 2021.  A virtual Zoom memorial is being held with family and friends on Sunday, April 25, 2021.
