Leland was born in Ottawa, Kansas, to Myrl and Katherine (Martin) Long on February 4, 1939 and died August 29, 2021.  He graduated from Northwest Missouri State with a double major in Math and Physics and a minor in Science in 1961.

He was a Boy Scout and earned his Eagle Scout badge when he was 14.  One of his memorable Boy Scout trips was a portage canoeing trip starting in Canada and working through northern Minnesota.  When he was a junior in high school, he was nominated to attend Boy's State.  (A group of young men who were recognized as future leaders)

His first job was delivering newspapers for a local paper, and he worked his way up to setting type for the same paper.  While in college he worked for Sears as a repairman.

Just before college he joined the National Guard and remained a member until he moved to California.

He met Frederica in their church youth group and were married in 1961. They just celebrated their 60 ^th anniversary in June.

In 1962, he and Frederica moved to Southern California to pursue teaching careers.  Shortly after arriving, Leland was drawn to the newly expanding field of computer science in 1964 and worked in that field for almost 40 years.  In 1984 he started his own company, Long Engineering Design.

While he was in college, he belonged to a service fraternity.  During his years as a systems analyst, he was a member of IEEE. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.

His hobbies included working on mechanical things and wood working.  He and a friend put a TV together for each of them from a Heathkit.  Then they made a wood cabinet for each of them.     He was the one his daughters called when they had questions about computers, finance or home repairs. They referred to him as "technical support." After he retired, he enjoyed researching the genealogy of both he and Fredie's families.

Leland is survived by his wife, Frederica (Dodge) Long, daughters Anita Long (Derald Herinckx) of Overland Park, Kanas, and Brenda Long (James Goran) of Placentia, California, as well as four grandchildren, Lauren Herinckx, Brett Herinckx, Stuart Goran, and William Goran.  He is preceded in death by his parents and older brother Elvin Long.

A memorial service will be held in the springs.
