Obituary

Lillian C. Barna served as Superintendent in three large urban school districts in America: San Jose Unified, CA, Albuquerque Public Schools, NM and Tacoma School District #10, WA.   She served as the Executive Director of the Large City Schools Superintendents organization and was a partner in the consulting firm Effective Leadership Services, Inc.

Lillian began her career as a secondary school and adult education teacher in New York City, and after moving to California taught preschool, elementary, junior high, and high school levels.  She subsequently served for three decades in administrative roles including Early Childhood Education Coordinator, Principal, and Superintendent.  Upon retirement, she enjoyed teaching again at Santa Clara University,  San Jose State University, and the National Hispanic University in their teacher and administrator preparation programs.

Her contributions toward the education of young people have been recognized by the California , New Mexico, and Washington State Legislatures where she was honored by the Governor for exceptional leadership.  Other awards include the Woman of Achievement Award (Santa Clara Comm. On the Status of Women and SJ Mercury News). induction into her Hunter College Hall of Fame, and the prized Anne Campbell Award in 1998 from the Women's Caucus of AASA for "consistent, unselfish, and courageous support of women in school administration."

Lillian has been active on numerous AASA committees including the Legislative, Resolutions, and Superintendents' Salary Committees, the Urban Advisory and Women's Caucus Boards, and the National Association of Administrators of Sate and Federal Education Programs.  She has chaired the Women's Advisory Committee and received the AASA Distinguished Service Award in 1994.  She was the first female Rotarian in Albuquerque, NM and continued to serve in her local chapters for the rest of her life.

Lillian will always be remembered as a doting mother, aunt and grandmother, and is survived by a loving family including sons Craig and Keith, his wife Tonya, and their sons Andrew, Bronson and Louis.

Visitation & Rosary to be held Friday evening Jun 4 th at 6PM at Alameda Family Funeral Home 12341 Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road Saratoga, CA 95070. Funeral Services will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 13716 Saratoga Avenue, Saratoga, CA on Saturday June 5 at  10AM followed by interment at Madronia Cemetery,  14766 Oak Street Saratoga, CA 95070 with a reception immediately following at 19700 Charters Avenue, Saratoga, CA 95070
