Margaret McCormick "Peg" Weiss passed away peacefully on May 30, 2020. Peg was as unique
in character as the city she was raised in and loved: San Francisco. She was different things to
different people, but she was loved by everyone who called her a friend because she
demonstrated a genuinely loving and caring spirit to everyone she knew.
Born in San Francisco on March 13, 1928, Peg was raised by Al & Mae McCormick, as well as
her beloved uncles, Jack, Rob and Will, and her Aunt Anne. She was an only child for the first
10 years of her life, until her little sister Nancy was born in 1938.
Peg loved to reminisce about growing up in San Francisco, attending dances and football games
at her alma mater, Polytechnic High School or just riding a bike with friends through Golden
Gate Park. The friendships that began at Poly literally lasted a lifetime as demonstrated by the
80th high school graduation luncheon she attended with a few of those friends in 2016.
She was a survivor of a golden age in San Francisco, and she loved to talk about it. The
Depression era and World War II brought hard times to San Francisco, but to Peg it was in many
ways a small town with so many things to do. On multiple occasions, her father and mother took
her over to the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939 and 1940.
After graduating from Poly in 1946, Peg attended Lone Mountain/San Francisco College for
Women, U.C. Berkeley, and San Francisco City College. To help cover expenses during her
college years, Peg worked as a salesclerk at the White House Department Store.
In 1952, she married Marion "Bud" Weiss of Taylor Ridge, Il. At the time, Bud was a recently
graduated ensign from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, so the early years of their life together
were spent following Coast Guard assignments in Morro Bay, CA and New London, CT – the
home of the USCG Academy. Eventually, Bud would leave the Coast Guard to begin a career as
a nuclear engineer at General Electric in San Jose. Peg and Bud raised their four boys in nearby
Saratoga, CA.
Peg is survived by her sons, Dirk, Michael, David (Nancy), and Timothy; her grandsons, Joshua
(Adrianna) Pressman and Sean Weiss; her sister-in-law, Ruth Elaine Bennett, as well as her
nieces, Julie, Jamie, Chris and nephew, Scott Wulferdingen and their respective families. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, and her sister, Nancy.
A small graveside burial service for family and close friends will be held at Gate of Heaven
Cemetery on Friday, June 12th. A larger celebration of life will be planned for after the current
shelter-in-place rules can be relaxed.
