Dr. Martin Tso Kai Liu, devoted and beloved husband, brother, uncle and granduncle passed away on December 12, 2024 after an arduous fight with lymphoma. He was born on January 19, 1944, when China was on the verge of victory against the Japanese, to Dr. Fah Hsuen Liu and Hsing Sun Liu in Hubei, China. When Martin was five years old his family relocated to Taiwan due to the Nationalist versus Communist civil war.   Martin was the sixth of seven children, a smart, studious, and sincere young man.

Martin graduated from National Taiwan University with a degree in Electrical Engineering.  He then came to the US in 1968 for graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana.  There he met and married Juliana Shuen-Hwa Huang and earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science.

The happy couple lived in Naperville, Illinois where Martin worked for Bell Labs.  In 1978 Martin and Juliana moved to the Bay Area where Martin worked for HP in their renowned HP Labs for over ten years.  He moved on to other Silicon Valley bellwethers: Silicon Graphics and then Sun Microsystems as a VP in Research and Development, before joining a startup, Adaptive Media.  He rounded out his resume by working with Juliana at Palo Alto Village Travel.  Juliana was the CEO and Martin was COO, i.e., tech support, mail clerk – whatever was required.

Martin and Juliana traveled extensively – cruises, tours – usually with friends or family. Over the years they had many adventures and experienced culture on six continents. Martin also loved: food, especially family banquets prepared by his cousins, nieces and nephews; golf - anywhere, anytime; technology – he was a nerd at heart; and getting a good deal (always).

He will be remembered for his generosity and willingness to always lend a helping hand to friends and family; from providing tech support for everyone (his sisters), being a home base for extended family, or a multitude of other kindnesses throughout his life.

Martin is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Juliana, his sister, Victoria (Danny), ten nieces and nephews: Chu (Deb), Chu Yin (Moon), Linda (Lawrence), Jerry (Vivian), Melba (Scott), Jane (Stuart), Bing (Kathy), Mary (Chris), Freda (Michael), and Howard (Yvonne), 13 grandnieces and nephews and eight great grandnieces and nephews.
