Mary T. McDonald, born on October 3, 1944, in South Boston, Mass., passed away in her home on November 1, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was 72 years old. The youngest of three daughters born to Joseph M. and Mary J. Scannell of South Boston, Mass., Mary was married to her beloved husband, Joe, for 46 years. Together they were blessed with three wonderful children, Eric, Karen (Kovacevich) and Marc.
Mary is survived by her adoring husband, Joe; her three loving children; son-in-law Greg Kovacevich; four wonderful grandchildren, Sophie, Curtis and Faye Kovacevich, and Lauren McDonald; step-granddaughter Yasmine Davis; and her two much-loved older sisters, Peggy Cole and her husband Peter, and Ann Gorman and her husband Joe. Mary was also was a big presence in the lives of her two nephews, Joseph and John Gorman, step-nephew Rob Cole and niece, Kristin Krause (Gorman) who will all miss her dearly.
Mary attended Gate of Heaven Catholic School through 12th grade and later studied at Boston Business School. She worked as an administrative assistant for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority for several years. In 1970, she married Joe McDonald. She and Joe moved with their children to San Jose, Calif., in 1976, and eventually settled in Cupertino.
Mary stayed home with her children for many years, opening their home to all the neighborhood kids, who would go there for the warm, welcoming spirit she created. Always a central figure among the extended families, Mary frequently hosted gatherings and holidays at her home. When the kids were older, she returned to work, finding a home at Fremont Union High School District in the administrative offices. Eventually Mary became executive assistant to the superintendent, a position she held for many years. Mary retired in 2010 and spent the next several years traveling the globe with Joe and spending time with family. She also enjoyed cooking, entertaining and shopping.
Her vibrant sense of humor and infectious laugh brought joy to everyone she knew. She will be missed more than words can express. Her vivacious spirit will stay alive in the hearts of all who loved her.
A service will be held at Alameda Family Funeral Home on November 7, 2016. The funeral home will open at 10 a.m. for sharing and visiting, and services will be held at 11 a.m.
