N. "Mani" Subramanian of Mountain View, California died at the age of 87 on Friday June 20 2025 in the Kindred Health Care center of San Leandro California from stroke complications.

Mani was born in Gudiyattam of the Vellore district in the state of Tamilnadu, India. He was the second eldest of nine children (seven sisters and one brother). His father was a clerk for the Indian Railways in Bengal where Mani spent his early childhood years. He went to the Ramakrishna Mission school for boys, an experience that profoundly shaped the rest of his life. After high school, he was admitted into the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur among its  first graduating classes. Upon graduating, he worked at Godrej in Mumbai and was subsequently selected for a coveted externship during which he spent several years in Dusseldorf, Germany working as an engineer. He learned and spoke German fluently, and treasured the time he spent in a country he grew to love. He spent the next chapter of his life at University of California, Berkeley where he received his Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering. He spent a good three decades working in Silicon Valley in hardware and software at Intel, IBM and other companies. An avid scholar throughout his life, he received multiple degrees from U.C. Berkeley, Santa Clara University and others across varied disciplines including Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, German and Sanskrit.

He taught extensively both at universities and later in life in senior centers, online courses and in his home. A lifelong devotee of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Sri Satya Sai Baba, Mani spent the entirety of his life pursuing Hindu ideals of self-liberation, and was a diligent practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga, which he taught as well.  Mani is survived by five sisters, two daughters, 19 nieces and nephews and two grandsons.
