Richard "Sonny"
Eugene Furtado
Jul 12, 1934 — Jan 25, 2022
Cupertino
Richard (also known as Sonny) peacefully passed away at home surrounded by loved ones, after suffering from Dementia for many years. He was 87 years old.
Born on the family farm at San Juan/Hollister Road to Joseph and Rose (Gomes) Furtado, his was a true multigenerational upbringing. Having a father and grandmother who emigrated from the Azores, he was fluent in Portuguese and Spanish. A mischievous young boy, his sisters, along with uncles Manuel, Frankie, and his best friend Elmer, kept watch over him - 100 acres of orchards provided plenty of room to roam!
Richard graduated from, and drove the School Bus for, Hollister High School where he met the love of his life, Maudine Inez Scattini (aka Susie). They were married on December 1, 1953; and eventually settled in Cupertino where their nine children were raised.
A very hard worker despite childhood polio, Richard worked for Colombo Bread for many years. Able to retire at 62, he then enjoyed many trips with Susie, reconnecting with his father in San Diego, visiting Elmer in Oregon, hunting and fishing with his four sons, and making his own bullets! He learned to snow ski, would regularly hike 10 miles in the hills of Saratoga, and enjoyed fishing in Alaska.
A devout Catholic, they attended Church of the Ascension in Saratoga for many years. Family gatherings (of which there many!) were always enjoyed by all, with everyone remembering his distinctive laugh and plenty of cigar smoking.
We would like to formally thank Richard's main caregivers; his wife Susie and son Michael.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Susie, his sisters Mary Jane and Charlotte. His children Ricci (Steve) Mason, Richard (Debbie) Furtado, Mary Sporck, Daniel (Kathy)Furtado, Rose (Al) Draeger, Bernadette (Deric) Durand, Michael Furtado, Chris (Cynthia) Furtado and Judy (David) Botelho, and Bob Reynolds. 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren with one on the way!!
A funeral mass will be held on February 2, 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedict's Church in Hollister. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery. Luncheon reception at Ridgemark.
Donations in his honor may be made to Second Harvest Food Bank.
