Robert Harold Dwyer was born in Honolulu, Hawaiian Territories to Harold Bertram and Edna Harrington Dwyer. Bob's early childhood was spent in Manila, where his father was employed by the Commercial Pacific Cable Company, which laid the first trans-pacific cable from San Francisco to Shanghai.  When it was clear that Japan would invade the Philippines, the family returned to their native state of California.  Bob attended Burlingame High School on the peninsula, where he met and fell in love for life with Alice Daley.

The war intervened in their courtship when in January 1945 Bob left high school early to enlist in the US Marines, where he served as admiral's orderly and bow gunner on the battleship Wisconsin. When he finished his tour of duty, he and Alice were married and he began a career in the securities industry as a board marker at the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange in San Francisco, where he attended Golden Gate College at night. He became a broker at Walston Hoffman & Goodwin, and then Vice President in the investment banking and brokerage firm Blyth & Co, where he was San Jose branch manager. Later he was a portfolio manager and investment advisor at EF Hutton and successor firms, retiring in 2009 after a sixty-year career.  He took enormous pride in serving his clients, many of whom became lifelong friends.

Bob served on the Saratoga city council and became vice-mayor. He was a long time member of the Saratoga Men's Club. He helped found St. Mark's parish in Santa Clara, raised funds for the chapel at Good Samaritan Hospital, served on the board of the Episcopal Homes Foundation and was a member of St. Andrews church in Saratoga since the early 1960s.  He was a student of geology, astronomy and quantum physics, the economists of the Austrian school, Marxism, environmentalism and other social manias, Christian theology and the stock and bond markets.  He climbed mountains, ran a marathon, rode his bicycle all over the Santa Clara Valley, climbed trees and skateboarded (briefly). He loved the songs of tin pan alley as a boy, and having a remarkable memory for doggerel, he sang one of those songs, with multiple verses, every day to Alice.

Bob's sister Thelma and brother Richard predeceased him. He is survived by his lifelong partner and love, Alice, his four children, Carrie, Bob(Nancy), Guy and Dan(Diana), grandchildren Robert(Amanda), Rachael Wisecarver(David), Carrie Anne Cook(Sonny), Mary Lyngstad(Chris), Kevin, Kathleen, Anne Cirone(Joseph), Samuel, Philip Konecky and Katherine, as well as six great-grandchildren. Most of all, he loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to whom he was known simply as "Grand", because he was.

A funeral service and reception will be held at 1PM Tuesday January 17, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 13601 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga CA.
