Robert Joseph (Bob) Joyce was born on October 7, 1936, in Pontiac Michigan. Bob was the only child of Robert Michael Joyce and Kathleen (Burke) Joyce, both immigrants from Ireland. Bob passed away peacefully, on February 26, 2026 in Mountain View, California, at the age of 89.
Bob grew up in Farmington, Michigan, before his family moved to Los Angeles when he was 11 years old. Bob met his future wife, Kathleen, at St. Agnes High School in Los Angeles. They were married on June 14, 1958 in Los Angeles. He moved with his family to Northern California in 1968, and to Cupertino in 1969. He was a long-time parishioner of St. Joseph of Cupertino Church.
Bob graduated from Loyola University (now Loyola Marymount Univ) on June 15, 1958 with a degree in Chemistry. Bob worked in the chemical analytical industry from 1958 to 2015 (57 years). Bob worked at Mobile Oil, Beckman Instruments, Dohrmann Instruments, and finally at Dionex Corp (now Thermo Fisher Scientific).
Bob was an active member in the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) working to establish industry standards for water analysis - the ASTM International Committee D19 on Water. Bob received the Max Hecht award in 1996 for his long-standing commitment to the D19 committee.
Bob loved the sciences, travel and family gatherings. For his work, Bob traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Bob was optimistic, outgoing and humorous; a gifted story teller.
Bob was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Virginia. Bob is survived by his wife of 67 years, Kathleen, his sons, Robert, Brian (Jeannelle), Daniel, Michael (Samantha), and his daughter, Teresa. Bob is also survived by his grandchildren, Vanessa, Ryan P., Allie, Dylan, Torsten, Tabatha, Wyatt, Ryan R., and his great grandson, Sebastian.
A memorial service is planned for Sunday, March 8, 2026, at 2:00 pm, with a reception to follow. The memorial will be held at Alameda Family Funeral, 12341 Saratoga Sunnyvale Rd, Saratoga, CA 95070.
