Sen Du, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully at 8 AM on November 29,2022 at the age of nearly 86. Sen was born in 1936 in Anqiu, Shandong to Anliang Du and Lihua Wang. Sen grew up with his older brother and mother until he was eleven years old when his father Anliang reunited with them after returning from U.S., where he was sent to study/work by the Chinese government. Sen earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (5-year program) at Tsinghua University in1958 and volunteered to go to frontier province Yunnan after graduation. He worked on a variety of design /testing roles in machinery/agricultural machinery/machine tools at Yunnan Bureau of Machinery Industry, Yunnan Bureau of Agricultural Machinery, and Yunnan Agricultural Machinery Institute, and later as technical leader for machine tool designing at Qujing General Machine Factory. From the late 70's he worked as Mechanical Engineer/Senior Mechanical Engineer in multiple areas of performance testing of machine tools at Yunnan Machinery Research Institute. Sen was a multilingual expert in machinery who translated numerous technical articles from English, French, Russian and Italian into Chinese and wrote abstracts for professional periodicals for 20 years in a row. He also took on a variety of other work in translation including being a translator for the onsite installation of a full set of imported large natural gas chemical equipment. Sen published multiple articles on professional journals including Lifting and Handling Machinery , Transfer Machine Information , and Yunnan Machinery .
Following his father's footstep, Sen came to U.S. at the age of 53 as a visiting scholar conducting research in manufacturing technology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He later worked as Machine Designer/Machine Design Engineer for several companies including National Manufacturing, Dorman Machine Productions, and General Resources Corp, for which he contributed by designing and improving many mechanical equipment/machines including dough mixer, container jack stand, filters, and auto-exhaust & welding fume removing equipment etc. In his retirement, Sen enjoyed translating ancient Chinese poetry into English and writing articles and poems. He published several books including: Du, Sen. A study on Mrs. Ai-Ling Zhang . Outskirts Press, 2008.; Du, Sen., et. al. Understanding China Via Poetry-A selection of 108 Chinese poems . Litfire Publishing, 2018.; among others. Before his passing, Sen was still working on some of unpublished works including interpreting the Book of Change in English from Chinese.
Sen is survived by his wife of 57 years, Yujun Chen; their two children, Ling (husband Xiaolin) and Hong (wife Jin) and his two grandchildren, Claire & Mingda.
Sen will always be remembered as an independent thinker with passion, a diligent engineer driven for innovation, a multilingual professional full of curiosity, an upright intellectual seeking spiritual truth, as well as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Our wishes will be always as the poem below depicted in Sen's translation work on one of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam:
"You have reached the finish line of the life's journey.
Be please with yourself in your grave and carefree.
Oh! In hundreds of thousands of years,
Life will revive from the soil as grass."
