Full of life until the end, Shiv passed on to his next set of adventures on July 20, at the ripe young age of 95.  Generous to a fault, his metaphoric heart was always big enough to accommodate everyone, but ultimately his physical heart could give no more.

Born in a village in British India without electricity or indoor plumbing, nine decades later he was an American citizen living in Silicon Valley and an avid user of smart phones and tablets for the most ancient of purposes:  maintaining relationships with people around the world of all backgrounds, races and religions.

As a child he never expected to lead a military life, but a twist of fate led him to answer the call of his newly formed homeland.  After thirty-three years of service to his country, during which he raised a regiment that earned honors, he retired a Brigadier General and spent the next two decades traveling the world, staying with friends and family that had scattered around the globe, making new friends and inspiring those around him.  His kind and outgoing nature meant a stranger standing in line behind him might become a dear friend.

A lifelong foodie whose boundless energy helped him maintain his athletic figure, he savored (and later mastered) cuisines from around the world.

An educated listener of Eastern and Western music, he enjoyed hearing live performances of Strauss by the Vienna Philharmonic as much as Ravi Shankar and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on their World Tours.  Every morning the unmistakable harmonics of a sitar emanated from his bedroom.

As the new millennium dawned, he settled with his daughter and son in San Jose.  His unending quest for knowledge drove his participation in myriad interests from field hockey to golf to cooking to roses.  It was never enough for him to dabble in things; he would pour his heart into each subject until he excelled at it.

Predeceased by his beloved brother, he is survived by his sister, children, cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandnephews, a yard full of roses and a worldwide cadre of friends whose lives he changed and who will miss him dearly.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorial gifts to the American Heart Association.
