Stephen C.
Chan
Apr 20, 1983 — Feb 21, 2020
Redwood City
Adored husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend Stephen Chan passed away peacefully on February 21, 2020, in Redwood City at age 36 after a brave and dignified battle with brain cancer. Survived by wife Janice Chen; parents Hsiao-Chun and Jenny Chan; brother Alan Chan (Ryan Samaroo); sister Sadie Haroon (Justin Haroon); and nephews Ethan and Colin whom he spoiled relentlessly.
Stephen was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 20, 1983. He graduated from St. Thomas Academy military high school and later the University of Minnesota studying economics. His love for the energy of big-city life led him to the bustling heart of New York City and then later to San Francisco where he met the love of his life, Janice. They married on the beaches of Oahu, Hawaii, on July 7, 2017, and when Stephen became ill, she cared for him with grace and love, a blessing for the last years of his life.
Stephen loved to travel and meet new people. With an inviting smile and sometimes mischievous spirit, he made friends wherever he went. There wasn't an adventure he said no to: motorcycle riding in Bali, karaoke with strangers, hiking in the Rockies and trying every manner of exotic foods. His generosity was immense. Nephews and the children of friends always had a gift in the mail, and his friends were never without a drink in their hand or a place to stay.
A relentless optimist, his spirits were seldom dampened throughout the fight with cancer, and all those who knew him will remember the love and laughter that defined him.
Celebration of life services will be held at Alameda Funeral Home 12341 Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road, Saratoga, CA 95070 on Saturday, May 23, 2020, at 10:30 am. Coffee and donuts will be available starting at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Brain Tumor Society through Stephen's remembrance page .
