Venkataraman Venkatasubramanyan passed away peacefully at his daughter's home in Los Gatos CA on November 5, at 91, with his family and caregivers by his side. He had been in declining health due to his cancer's metastasis over the last year. He is survived by his sons Paddu, Shekar, and Narayan; his daughters Sujata and Shailaja; his nine grandchildren (Vighnesh, Kavita, Anjali, Vaidehi, Madhuri, Sakshi, Smrithi, Vivek, and Medha) and many of his brothers and sisters (he had five brothers and seven sisters in all).

Mani was born in Madras (now Chennai).  He graduated from Hindu High School and completed his undergraduate education in Chemical Engineering at Loyola College and Alagappa Chettiar College of Technology.  He moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) to begin his professional life as an engineer in 1952 and settled there. He spent most of the next four decades in manufacturing tires (he would have preferred "tyres"), firstly at Firestone and then later in Ceat.

He married Saroja in 1956, and they started a family in Bombay.  They raised three sons and two daughters, seeing them through college and on to higher education sometimes in faraway lands.  All of them took inspiration from his willingness to move from where he was born to plant roots all over the globe.  Once he retired, they began traveling worldwide to visit their children.

Mani and Saroja remained inseparable for 56 years until cancer took her in 2013. After she passed away, he had little to keep him in Bombay.  He divided his time between his daughter in the Bay Area and his son in Sydney, Australia, traveling between them every equinox and enjoying a life of permanent summer.  The pandemic forced an extension of his stay in Australia, after which he returned to the United States in 2021 for good.

His attitude to life was exemplary.  He rode the bumps in life with minimal fanfare and never complained about anything.  When he was first diagnosed, he told a doctor that it was "just a little cancer, no need to make a fuss". He believed in living a disciplined and active life.  Until very recently, he did yoga and went for a daily hour-long walk without fail.  He was also very religious, chanting from his prayer book for more than two hours daily.  He also took it upon himself to teach Rudram to many devoted students.  In his younger years, Mani developed a taste for Hindi movies and songs that remained with him during the course of his lifetime.

A brief Hindu ceremony followed by cremation will be held at the Alameda Family Funeral & Cremation (at 12341 Saratoga Sunnyvale Rd, Saratoga, CA 95070) at 11:30 am on Tuesday, November 8, 2022.

The family would like to express deep gratitude toward his caregivers, Linieta, Lau, and Ley.  Their helping hands and ready smiles were all around him during the last few months.  They would like to express their deepest thanks to Doctors Morshedi, Gholami, and Noorani who treated his cancer.  They would also like to thank the Doctors and Nurses at the Hospice of the Valley who gave him outstanding care these last seven weeks.
