Bill's early life was spent in England where he met and married the love of his life, Patricia, with whom he shared his life for over 50 years before she preceded him in death from cancer in 2014.

A resident of Saratoga for the last 46 years, Bill lost his battle with melanoma cancer and passed peacefully with his daughters, Diane and Helen by his side.

Bill is also survived by his grandchildren Shannon and Caleb Stein, and his siblings, Patrick McSweeney of San Jose, CA, Elizabeth Skelton of Canada, and Dennis McSweeney of Australia.

Bill was an all-around sportsman and enjoyed swimming, boxing, cricket, rugby, skiing, soccer, diving, and golf. He is considered to be one of the greatest Enfield Ignatian Rugby players of all time overall, and in the Fly Half position.

Bill played the guitar and loved to sing Irish tunes and oldies with his friends and family.  He enjoyed reciting poetry and listening to a wide variety of music. With Pat, Bill enjoyed seeing live shows by Elvis, Roy Orbison, The Three Tenors as well as The Who, Rolling Stones, and Squeeze among many others.

Bill attended Saint Ignatius College in England and studied electronics at Essex University. He was a Staff Electrical Engineer at British Relay TV before emigrating to the United States and settling in the Bay Area with his family in 1967. He enjoyed a successful career in the electronics field. He is known mainly for his work as Senior Staff Design Engineer at Ampex Corporation in Redwood City.

During his career, Bill was awarded a number of patents for his inventions.  His expertise as an international video consultant in the late 1970s brought him to shows in Vegas and across the United States, as well as projects in Toronto, Geneva and to Moscow ahead of the 1980 Olympic games.

Since 1992 Bill and his late wife, Patricia enjoyed co-ownership of the Duke of Edinburgh pub in Cupertino where they would celebrate special occasions and meet friends regularly.

Bill and Patricia loved to travel, dance, sing and entertain at their beautiful home in Saratoga. Bill enjoyed time with his loyal Golden Labrador, Bruce.

During the shelter in place he enjoyed Zoom calls with his grandkids and a weekly virtual happy hour with a few of his mates. Bill filled a room with his charisma and zest for life. He was the life of the party, a loving husband, caring father and loyal friend. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Bill will be laid to rest at Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga.
